Self-Care Tips for Caregivers

So often caregivers around the world provide the best care for everyone but themselves. We know at times it feels easier said than done, however we must remember that when we are whole and well, we are able to better care for ourselves and the individuals that need us most.

Here are a few self-care tips for caregivers.

1) Therapy- we are strong advocates for encouraging everyone to participate in therapy as an act of self-care. Simply a person to talk to, and to help us navigate life with tools unique to our needs is critical. #NormalizeTherapy

2) Plan Your Week- Reduce the stress of the week by taking time to plan. This may look like planning meals, arranging care and support services in advance, and this also includes penciling in time for your self-care. You deserve even just 10min a day for YOU.

3.) Time in Nature- Get out for a walk, or just do something as small as standing in your yard or a nearby park to take in all the benefits of being in nature. Draw your attention to the flowers/trees around you, the sky above and the ground beneath you. Take a few deeps breaths right where you are and watch how you feel.

4.) Journal Your Thoughts- There are many benefits to journaling. Grab a pen and go crazy on the paper. Write out all that's on your mind. And end with writing a couple of things that you are grateful for.

5.) Deep Breathing- Set a timer for 5 minutes to simply breathe. In through your nose, and out through your mouth, filling your belly with air and slowly releasing. Deep breathing relaxes our nervous system, which often times stays in a fight and/or flight response from the daily stressors of the day.

6.) Ask for Help- And lastly, remember that even caregivers need care and support. Ask for help in the areas where you could use some support. Your Special Helper provides relief support for caregivers in your time of need as well. Whether it's a few hours away to tend to your own needs, make the call and let us know how we can help.
